Yuro Moniz began working with ceramics in 2017, drawn to the material after a career in film and photography. Working with clay felt like coming home, deeply connected to her diverse heritage of Surinamese, Chinese, Indian, and Jewish-Portuguese roots. She trained with artisans in South Korea and Morocco, learning where craft, nature, and community intersect. Her intuitive approach to ceramics, often using traditional coiling techniques, reflects the influence of powerful women she encountered in these communities.
“I see ceramics as a canvas for a story, just as ceramic objects have traditionally carried narratives of customs and rituals from specific times. In this era of technological development, we seem to drift further from nature, yet at the same time, we long for that connection.”
